Sunsets & Solitude: How to Pause in the Everyday Hustle

Not all transformative journeys require a boarding card and a backpack. Some unfold between everyday moments – the kind you only notice when you pause and are not rushing to be somewhere else or have constant lingering thoughts of responsibilities.

For years, life felt like a constant race.  Under the constant pressure of work and personal duties to cater to in a foreign land, I had unknowingly trained myself to look past simple moments of serenity, such as sunsets.

Pausing felt like a luxury I couldn’t afford.

Nourish your soul like you do your body. Sometimes that means choosing silence.

The Moment I Chose to Pause

I have driven by watching many sunsets to date, however, I would be too busy attending calls, planning meals, or mentally mapping out the next day’s to-do list.

However, when I passed by a lit-up skyline today, I felt a fleeting sense of warmth in my soul.  I paused for a moment and experienced a sense of calm as I watched the sky change.  The tranquil hues of gold and the quiet stillness enveloped me, creating a serene atmosphere amid the rush hour traffic, despite the traffic and honking horns all around me.

As I watched the city soften under the fading sun, I decided to stop by Starbucks to savor the moment. I let myself be still without any distractions.

Learning to Cherish Solitude

It was just me and a warm cup of coffee. But somehow, in the stillness, it felt like so much more. It was full of peace, presence, and a quiet joy that I hadn’t allowed myself before.  This solitude was a gift, a moment to reconnect with myself beyond the noise of years of daily grind.

Perhaps it’s my age or this new chapter in life that has led me to finally let go of constant rushing. These pauses, which I once ignored, now feel much needed and sacred.  That sunset wasn’t just a view; it was a reminder that I have earned the right to slow down and savor these simple, powerful moments.

I am reclaiming time for myself – not the kind that’s measured in tasks, but in presence. In that pause, I felt something that I hadn’t experienced in years – a gentle kind of freedom.
